There are a number of free online courses and e-learning training relating to safeguarding:
Learning from Serious Case Reviews Level 1 to 4
This learning from serious case reviews will equip all those who come into contact with children with the knowledge and understanding they need to respond to neglect, abuse and extra-familiar harm to help prevent future serious child safeguarding incidents.
Keep Them Safe: Protecting Children from CSE
Parents against Child Sexual Exploitation (PACE) provide a free eLearning training course called Keep them Safe which is a useful introduction to child sexual exploitation (CSE). The course is aimed at parents but will also be valuable to professionals with safeguarding responsibilities. The course provides information on what CSE is, what are the signs and indicators that a child might be being exploited, an understanding of the impact of CSE on families, and what to do if you suspect a child might be at risk of this form of abuse.
The National Referral Mechanism (NRM) for Child Victims of Trafficking
Every Child Protected from Trafficking (ECPAT UK) have launched free online training sessions for professionals who are self-isolating or working from home due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This recorded webinar was designed to build knowledge of the National Referral Mechanism, your duties and best practice. More information and the webinar can be accessed here. Modern Slavery
This free course, provided by The Open University, through OpenLearn - Modery Slavery training, is designed to develop an understanding of the international system of human rights protection in relation to modern slavery, but also encourage an appreciation of the influence of International Human Rights Law on the development of the domestic system of human rights protection.
Forced Marriage
This free safeguarding course aims to raise awareness of forced marriage and help professionals who have a responsibility to safeguard vulnerable children, young people and adults. It explores the warning signs of forced marriage and the right actions to take to help protect potential victims.
Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)
Virtual College, on behalf of the Home Office, provide a free eLearning course on Recognising and Preventing Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). FGM is a procedure where the female genitals are deliberately cut. The course follows Hope’s journey exploring issues relating to FGM and how they can affect an individual throughout their whole life. The training aims to help a wide range of professionals to identify and assist girls who are at risk of FGM.
Prevent
The Government provide an introductory eLearning course to raise awareness of the Prevent duty. The duty in the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015 is on specified agencies to have due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism. The course provides a foundation on which to develop further knowledge around the risks of radicalisation and the role that you can play in supporting those at risk.
Understanding Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence
IDAS is the largest specialist charity in Yorkshire supporting anyone experiencing or affected by domestic abuse or sexual violence. They offer a free online Domestic Abuse training course which is aimed at voluntary groups who work with adults and children or young people, to give a basic awareness of issues surrounding domestic abuse. They also run a free online sexual violence training course which give a basic awareness of issues surrounding rape and sexual violence
Understanding Young Minds
Virtual College have worked in partnership with SelfharmUK to create a free online course to help parents talk about the issue of self-harm with their children. Spotting the signs can be difficult, and approaching the subject can be uncomfortable. This course aims to provide a basic awareness of the subject to help you approach your children with confidence.
Suicide Prevention
Every Life Matters - Suicide training one hour bitesize awareness session is aimed at anyone in the community who wants to learn more about the myths and facts surrounding suicide, understand when someone might be at risk, how to talk directly and comfortably about suicide, and what we can all do to offer practical support. They also offer longer FREE sessions for practitioners. Bookings are through Eventbrite.
Understanding Animal Welfare in Violent Homes
This free safeguarding course has been designed to help frontline staff understand the link between family abuse and animal abuse, and is aimed at all professionals who have a responsibility to safeguard vulnerable children, young people and adults at risk
Young People and Gambling
The Young Gamers and Gamblers Education Trust (YGAM) are a leading National charity collaboratively delivering the UK’s £10million national education programme to those working with young people (age 7-25), to raise awareness around the potential harms associated with gaming and gambling. They work in a variety of health and educational settings, safeguarding and youth organisations. They are currently running some free Gambling training.
Fire Safety in the Home – for Home Carers and Housing Providers
The London Fire Brigade (LFB) have developed a training package aimed at care workers and housing providers to help identify key fire risks and hopefully prevent fires from starting in the first place. The course takes approximately 1 hour to complete and enrolment is via this form, making a note of your user name and password prior to submitting the form.
Parenting Courses
If you live in the Frimley area which covers Bracknell Forest you can have free access to four online parenting guides which include top tips from childcare, education and NHS health experts. Access to the guides is unlimited with no expiry date, so you can return as and when you need and want to. Each guide has between 5 to 11 sessions which last roughly 20 minutes each, there are also activities that can be carried out between courses.
